Luego de 28 horas de intenso trabajo, rescatistas lograron reinsertar a la ballena varada en Mar del Tuyú
El cetáceo de aproximadamente 7 toneladas volvió al mar tras permanecer varado durante 28 horas. Rescatistas de Mundo Marino, Prefectura Naval, Municipio del Partido de la Costa, Defensa Civil, Guardavidas y voluntarios participaron del operativo de rescate.
Los importantes esfuerzos realizados desde la mañana del sábado 29 de septiembre hasta el mediodía siguiente hicieron posible darle una nueva esperanza a la ballena jorobada. Fueron necesarias 28 horas de un arduo trabajo en equipo de más de 30 personas comprometidas y apasionadas persiguiendo un solo objetivo: salvarle la vida a un gigante.
Todo comenzó con un llamado de un vecino de la localidad costera durante la mañana del sábado, que alertó a los profesionales de la Fundación Mundo Marino. En seguida, los biólogos y técnicos de esa institución asistieron al lugar. Contaron con la ayuda de Prefectura Naval, La Municipalidad del Partido de la Costa, Guardavidas, Boys Scouts y vecinos voluntarios de Mar del Tuyú.
“Cuando llegamos el sábado a las 9.30 de la mañana la ballena estaba varada en la orilla. Hicimos intentos para reflotarla empujándola hacia el agua, pero no tuvimos éxito. Luego, la Municipalidad trajo una retroexcavadora para levantar al animal con una camilla y moverla. Con mucho esfuerzo logramos que quede mirando hacia el mar y con la cantidad de agua suficiente para que pudiera flotar, pero si bien la ballena flotó, no reaccionó cuando tuvo la oportunidad de nadar ya que no movió sus aletas pectorales ni la cola. El mismo oleaje la volvió a sacar a la orilla. No tenía la fuerza para impulsarse y salir”, explicó Karina Álvarez, bióloga y responsable de Conservación de la Fundación Mundo Marino, una de las profesionales que estuvo presente durante todo el operativo.
Al anochecer y dado que los protocolos de seguridad establecen que los rescatistas no deben permanecer en el mar si no hay visibilidad (recordemos que se trata de una ballena de 10 metros y, aproximadamente, 7 toneladas) lo que se hizo fue montar una guardia que se quedó en la costa junto a la ballena.
“Aunque confiábamos en que la pleamar de la noche quizá empujara a la ballena mar adentro, al retomar el operativo durante la mañana del domingo nos encontramos con el animal varado en la orilla totalmente apoyado sobre el sustrato arenoso. Dada la presencia del sol, lo mantuvimos húmedo y cubierto para evitar la hipertermia (aumento de su temperatura corporal)”, agregó Álvarez.
Finalmente, y aunque el panorama no era alentador, se apeló a una última estrategia: el equipo coordinado por los expertos de la Fundación Mundo Marino logró ubicar las cinchas debajo del pesado animal para que la retroexcavadora pudiese moverlo a un lugar del mar con mayor profundidad. Si bien esto ayudó, se necesitó otro recurso para intentar que el animal pudiese pasar la rompiente. Fue por esto que se sumó una embarcación que logró desplazar al cetáceo aguas adentro donde el animal recuperó sus fuerzas y logró nadar por sus propios medios ante la emoción de los rescatistas.
