Una orca varada pudo regresar al mar gracias al esfuerzo de toda una comunidad
Rescatistas de Mundo Marino, Prefectura Naval Argentina, Defensa Civil, Municipalidad del Partido de la Costa, Guardavidas y vecinos trabajaron por casi 20 horas expuestos a bajísimas temperaturas para reinsertarla. Mirá el emocionante momento.
El llamado de alerta había llegado a Mundo Marino durante la noche del 24 de agosto, avisando que tres orcas se encontraban varadas en la localidad de Nueva Atlantis, a 50 kilómetros de San Clemente del Tuyú. Inmediatamente un equipo de rescate de la Fundación acudió a socorrerla. Al llegar al lugar se encontraron con un sólo animal en una situación crítica ya que estaba varado muy adentrado en la costa y visiblemente acalambrado.
Enseguida comenzaron los primeros trabajos para contener la situación. Como la orca se encontraba totalmente apoyada sobre uno de sus laterales, se procedió a enderezarla para evitar que el espiráculo quedara debajo del agua y desencadenara un ahogamiento. Luego, veterinarios de Mundo Marino le hicieron una extracción de sangre y de aire espirado para determinar si tenía alguna patología y le suministraron medicamentos para ayudarla a mantenerse estable en esa dura situación.
Una vez hecho eso, se intentó durante horas reintroducirla. Debido a su gran tamaño, peso (aproximadamente 4 toneladas) y ubicación la tarea fue imposible para esos primeros rescatistas que, no obstante, lucharon casi toda la noche. Sin embargo, al amanecer, a pesar del frío y los fuertes vientos, la comunidad comenzó a acercarse y a ofrecer ayuda. Rápidamente, se juntaron casi medio centenar de personas.
“El panorama no era alentador porque la marea estaba baja, el animal estaba muy encallado en la arena y había mucho viento y frío. Ayer por la noche lo primero que hicimos fue enderezar al animal que estaba varado de costado para intentar reintroducirlo. Pero recién hoy, con la ayuda de toda la comunidad pudimos pasar una camilla por debajo de la orca, levantarla y guiarla entre todos al mar.”, explicó Ignacio Peña, uno de los técnicos de la Fundación Mundo Marino que estuvo presente durante el rescate.
En total, las maniobras llevaron casi 20 horas y, a pesar de que por momentos se pensó que sus probabilidades de sobrevivir eran ínfimas, la orca se recuperó y logró nadar mar adentro.
“Es una mezcla de sensaciones. El panorama era tremendo. Se la veía tan débil y acalambrada que parecía imposible rescatarla. Veíamos que cada vez se complicaba más, pero estábamos todos muy conectados. Nos pusimos el objetivo de que tenía que poder volver. Estar en el agua con ella y verla encarar mar adentro fue algo increíble. Un sueño” aseguró tiritando de frío y entre lágrimas Florencia Speciale, Jefe de departamento de Fauna de Mundo Marino.
Para el rescate, se utilizó un protocolo distinto al utilizado la semana pasada con la ballena jorobada varada y con una red de pesca en su aleta. Esta vez, se necesitó la ayuda de dos excavadoras y una camilla especialmente diseñada por Mundo Marino para el rescate de grandes cetáceos. El objetivo era ayudar a mover al animal hacia una profundidad en la que pudiese nadar. Una vez en el agua, dado que el giraba por el gran oleaje, los rescatistas emprendieron una tarea muy peligrosa: tratar de mantener a la orca derecha mientras sus músculos se desentumecían. Era la única manera de ayudarla a recobrar la movilidad.
Afortunadamente, este tipo de tareas pueden llevarse adelante, gracias a que el equipo de Mundo Marino lleva años trabajando en el rescate de animales marinos, perfeccionando sus técnicas, capacitando profesionales y acumulando conocimiento y experiencia para poder actuar frente a estas situaciones, por desgracia, cada vez más habituales.
“Pudimos rescatarla porque tenemos protocolos muy claros de qué hacer en estos casos. Primero, cavamos alrededor del animal para que ingresara agua debajo de su cuerpo y no se le comprimieran tanto lo órganos. Segundo, mojamos con agua fresca sus aletas ya que a través de ellas pueden regular su temperatura. Un animal varado y expuesto al sol puede desencadenar un cuadro de hipertermia. Además cubrimos su cuerpo con toallas húmedas para evitar que se le lesione su piel por el sol ya que tienen muy poca keratina y es muy sensible. Tercero, balanceamos suavemente a la orca para que no se siga acalambrando mientras esperábamos la subida de la marea”, afirmó Karina Álvarez, bióloga de la Fundación Mundo Marino.
Mientras este rescate se llevaba adelante, otras dos orcas aparecieron muertas a pocos kilómetros: una en la localidad de Mar de Ajó y otra en Villa Gesell. Muy posiblemente, (aunque siempre en el plano de las conjeturas) se traten de las mismas orcas que el vecino de Nueva Atlantis alertó haber visto junto a la orca rescatada. En este momento, biólogos de Mundo Marino están estudiando las posibles causas de estas muertes.

Comunicarse de manera urgente con personal idóneo, no sacar al animal del agua, humedecerlo y alejar a los curiosos.
