Los expertos señalan que en la mayoría de los casos son de carácter transitorio, pero algunas personas pueden sufrir complicaciones neurológicas respiratorias y cardiovasculares.
La batalla contra el coronavirus puede alargarse más de lo previsto inicialmente para las personas que superan la enfermedad. Los expertos advierten que en algunos casos los pacientes que han recibido el alta médica pueden sufrir secuelas tiempo después de dejar atrás la COVID-19 a causa de una reacción descontrolada del sistema inmunitario.
En concreto, se calcula que entre el 15% y el 20% de los individuos curados se verán afectados por algún tipo de secuela provocada por el coronavirus. En la mayoría de los casos serán transitorias, “básicamente fatiga e intolerancia al esfuerzo», según ha revelado Francisco Cegri, enfermero y coordinador del grupo de trabajo de atención a las personas mayores de la Asociación de Enfermería familiar y comunitaria de Cataluña (AIFiCC).
Sin embargo, los efectos que pueden padecer a largo plazo las personas que han superado la enfermedad son, en ocasiones, de carácter más grave. En este sentido, los profesionales sanitarios han comprobado que hay sujetos que padecen complicaciones neurológicas respiratorias y cardiovasculares tras haber eliminado el virus de su organismo.
“Vemos que un porcentaje significativo de personas que han estado graves y han superado la COVID-19 padece secuelas. Y, además, sabemos que esto será un problema de salud pública por que puede cronificarse y, por tanto, no ser una situación puntual», asegura Francisco Cegri en declaraciones que recoge la agencia EFE.
Reacción del sistema inmunitario
El motivo de que se produzcan estas secuelas tras superar la enfermedad es que el cuerpo produce una reacción inmunitaria exagerada de las citocinas ante el coronavirus. Estos elementos son las proteínas reguladoras de la respuesta inmune y pueden causar, en los casos más graves, un proceso inflamatorio generalizado que puede llegar a un fallo multiorgánico.
La AIFiCC recomienda a las personas que padecen secuelas más leves que realicen ejercicio de manera regular y que mantengan una dieta saludable y equilibrada. Asimismo, los expertos aconsejan que se efectúen ejercicios de respiración con el objetivo de aumentar la capacidad pulmonar y activar la musculatura respiratoria.
